‘Illegal’ angst on air
Either Rep. Dana Rohrabacher or Rep. Chris Cox could be on the chopping block, at least with conservative talk-radio listeners, after being guests on KFI’s The John & Ken Show on Tuesday. Cox and Rohrabacher were among five Southern California Republican representatives the show’s hosts have called to account for their party’s lack of action to stop illegal immigration, show co-host John Kobylt said Wednesday. Report stirs up license debate
Buried in the 9/11 commission’s report is a recommendation that the federal government should standardize identification documents issued by states, including driver’s licenses. In California, the proposal could inject yet another element into a proposed law that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain licenses. The emotional debate, pitting the Legislature’s Democratic Latino Caucus against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, is expected to resume now that the budget battle is nearing an end. Meanwhile, President Bush can implement more than 40 of the commission’s recommendations by executive order, including the license proposal. Read the story here.
Lawmakers fret over license bill
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has backtracked on his promise to move forward on legislation that would allow about 2 million illegal immigrants to get state driver’s licenses, legislative representatives said Wednesday. Schwarzenegger has not provided a written counterproposal to Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, author of the driver’s license bill known as state Senate Bill 1160, said Edward Headington, Cedillo’s spokesman. Read the story here.
Using multiple databases, U.S. border agent finds woman on watch list
HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) – A Border Patrol agent’s check of multiple databases showed a woman with a mutilated South African passport was on a government watch list, a Democratic congressman said Wednesday. “He had that gut feeling that law enforcement officials have,” Rep. Solomon Ortiz said, adding the FBI might not have been alerted to Farida Goolam Mohamed Ahmed, 48, if the agent hadn’t been persistent. A senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, has told The Associated Press investigators were trying to determine whether Ahmed had ties to terrorist groups. Cash-Strapped?
Geragos says Peterson and his family have no money left to hire experts to challenge upcoming prosecution witnesses and has filed a formal request to get government funds for his defense. A closed hearing on Geragos’ request was held Wednesday at Stanislaus County Superior Court in Modesto, ABC News has learned. Peterson is accused of killing his wife Laci and the couple’s unborn child. His murder trial – which is being held in San Mateo County’s Redwood City, about 70 miles from Peterson’s residence in Modesto – nearly ground to a halt this week when Geragos said there was no money left for Peterson’s defense. Some prosecution witnesses were dropped from the schedule this week after Geragos made his plea. Expert witnesses can charge thousands of dollars for their work and testimony. A single DNA test can cost more than $10,000. Read the story here.

South African woman’s passport prompts federal investigation
Farida Goolam Mohamed Ahmed, 48, was arrested July 19 at the McAllen airport and charged four days later with illegal entry into the United States, falsifying information and falsifying a passport. She was denied bond on Tuesday by a federal magistrate. A senior federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that investigators were trying to determine whether the woman had ties to terrorists groups. So far nothing has been substantiated, the source said. Read the story here.
No bail for woman reportedly on terror list
HARLINGEN - U.S. Congressman Solomon Ortiz said Tuesday that a South African woman detained by immigration officers at the McAllen airport last week is on a watch list for suspected terrorists. The Muslim woman, Farida Goolam Mahomed Ahmed, 48, was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents July 19 after she made an attempt to board a flight at McAllen International Airport. After a lengthy hearing Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Dorina Ramos in McAllen ruled there was probable cause to hold Ahmed on federal charges of unlawful entry, making false statements and presenting an altered South African passport with four pages torn out. She denied bail for Ahmed. Read the story here.
Potential terrorists released due to lack of jail space, congressman says
July 23, 2004 – Middle Easterners with possible terrorist ties have been detained after entering the country from Mexico but released for lack of jail space, said U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness. “It is true. It is very reliable information, from the horse’s mouth, and it’s happening all over the place,” Ortiz, D-Texas, told The Herald on Thursday. “It’s very, very scary, and members (of Congress) know about this. We have contacted several agencies, and I have talked to some people, but I can’t say who.” Read the story here.
TWO GROUPS OF MIDDLE-EASTERN INVADERS CAUGHT IN COCHISE COUNTY IN PAST SIX WEEKS
However, seasoned Border Patrol field agents have shared some disturbing information with the Tumbleweed as well as other civilian sources with the hope the information will make it to the general public. The Tumbleweed has verified information that a flood of middle-eastern males have been caught entering the country illegally east of Douglas, Arizona. The increased patrols in the Huachuca Mountains area of Cochise County, seems to have diverted the flow of OTM’s, “other than Mexicans” east to the Chiricahua Mountains. Adame, who says many of the agents in the area are “green”, questions why they would have shared the information with the Tumbleweed or any other source. “Our policy is to turn any OTM’s over to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security,” Adame said in a phone call made to the Tumbleweed Wednesday morning. Santee man’s terror claims discounted
The arrest of a Santee man in Iowa two weeks ago set off alarm bells among San Diego’s counterterrorism community after the man, a Muslim convert, claimed to have knowledge of al-Qaeda operatives and plans to shoot up trolleys here. What made the story even more frightening: In his SUV were flight training manuals and a simulator, documents in Arabic, bulletproof vests and night-vision goggles, a night-vision scope for a rifle, a telescope, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
